Match report: Jhamat and Kearns secure Dev. Squad win
An impressive performance from Liverpool Ladies Development Squad on Sunday afternoon, beating Sheffield F.C. 2-0.
Liverpool Ladies Development Squad secured a 2-0 league win over Sheffield F.C. on Sunday afternoon.
First half goals from Simran Jhamat and Bo Kearns were enough to earn the three points from the Yorkshire side while the Reds also defended resolutely to keep a clean sheet.
In the early stages of the contest Jhamat was proving to be a handful, harrying and putting pressure on Sheffield. Jhamat forcing the visitors into conceding a corner that was headed narrowly wide by Naomi Hartley.
Hartley recently made her first team bow for the Reds and captained England U17s as they qualified for the European finals in May. The centre half put in another commanding performance at the back, intercepting a dangerous through ball and confidently carrying it out from the back in the opening ten minutes.
Hartley was joined by five Liverpool team mates in qualifying for the tournament and another of those stood out during the first half. Kearns with powerful deliveries from set pieces and a series of clever passes undoing Sheffield’s midfield to create opportunities for the Reds.
One smart pass seen Kearns clip the ball around to Thomas who had made a dashing run on the right wing, Thomas made it to the edge of the box but Sheffield recovered to nick back the ball.
The Reds began to look the side most likely to take the lead, Paige Cole controlling a cross in from Courtney Willis and registering the first chance of the game shooting just over the crossbar.
Back-to-back efforts from Kearns were also kept out, the first a blistering free kick tipped wide by the ‘keeper who also caught the second deflected strike from range.
The midfielder also provided a superb cross to pick out Willis in space at the back post, her effort inches wide.
Willis would have a hand in the opening goal just minutes later however, her free kick initially cleared off the line and the rebound falling to Jhamat who seen her low drive nestle in the back of the net.
Before half time Kearns got the goal her performance deserved, closing down a clearance from the goalkeeper and calmly finishing into an empty goal to double Liverpool’s lead.
In the second half the Reds went in search of more goals to add to their tally; Jhamat’s shot taking a deflection and being saved, Thomas firing wide after impressively skipping past the full-back and Jhamat once more denied by the ‘keeper.
As Sheffield attempted to drag themselves back into the game Liverpool’s defence stepped up their efforts. The Reds defending well as a team with Hartley getting the ball back to Gemma Bonner under pressure from the striker and Lucy Roberts providing a block following a stinging strike.
Sheffield also struck the crossbar and had another chance pushed onto the post by Jess Carberry.
In injury time with the visitors still pushing to pull a goal back, a punch from Carberry and two successive blocks from Hartley preserved Liverpool’s clean sheet.
